1/2"-12 Thread Pitch

This is a standard specification describing the size and spacing of a screw or bolt thread. Here's how it works:

  • 1/2" - The nominal (major) diameter of the thread. The outside diameter of the external thread is approximately half an inch.
  • 12 - The number of threads per inch (TPI). There are 12 complete threads in one inch of length.
  • Pitch (Derived Value) - The distance from one thread crest to the next. For 1/2"-12:
    • Pitch = 1 ÷ 12 inch
    • Pitch ≈ 0.0833 inches per thread
    • Value does not come out evenly because it's defined in inches, but was designed using nonstandard measurement. We are converting it.
    • In metric terms, the thread is approximately Ø12.7 × 2.12 mm.
