As handy as bathroom storage can be, the lingering danger of rust and corrosion from excess moisture can ruin anyone’s day. While it seems obvious in hindsight, a lot of people don’t take into account exactly what the moisture from showers, baths, and the like can do to the fixtures in your bathroom. From metal shelves to faucet handles and everything in between, rusted bathroom fixtures can cost a lot of money to repair or replace and can start to add up after a while. If you’re looking for ways to prevent rust and other damage on your bathroom fixtures, here’s three of our favorite tips: Invest in Rust-Proof Shelving It might sound self-evident, but the fact of the matter is that a lot of people don’t consider what kind of shelving they use in their bathroom, or how it can be affected by the environment in the bathroom overall. The next time you need bathroom shelving, consider something like chrome wire shelving or bathroom storage like towel racks and bathroom wall shelves with similar construction. Many bathroom shelves are available with rust-proof coatings (like epoxy) already applied, and other shelves made of chrome, steel, or even glass can be much easier to clean if the rust starts to bloom. Speaking of which… Clean Everything Regularly No matter how durable your shelves might be, everything in a bathroom can benefit from being regularly cleaned and dried to prevent rust and mildew from growing. Mixtures of baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar applied with a stiff brush can go a long way towards removing existing rust and preventing the build up of further crud and gunk on your shelves - but you need to remember to do it on a regular and semi-frequent basis, otherwise the problem could get worse than you’re expecting. Re-Organize the Other Metal in Your Bathroom Even after taking care of the big shelves and fixtures in your bathroom, you’re still at risk for rust stains due to some of the products being stored on said shelves. Bathroom supplies in metal containers like shaving cream and (ironically enough) cleaning products can start to leave metal rings on shelves or the bathtub if left out and exposed to the wrong kind of moisture. Make sure to store these products under the sink or in the closet to prevent them from leaving rings and encouraging the growth of rust in your bathroom.
