Closet shelving is a handy addition to any closet or bedroom that a lot of people might not use to its full potential.
That’s not to say it goes unused, nor are people always using it the wrong way, but there’s some ways to use that space to really make the most of the room you have!
If you’re looking for inspiration, here’s a few things you can start keeping on your closet shelves to make sure you’re using all the space you can:
Makeup pallets: Whether kept in a box, a bag, or just laid out across the shelf, extra makeup (the stuff you save for fancy occasions, the stuff you’ll wear one day, etc) can be easily kept on a closet shelf to free space elsewhere. This is particularly good if you have a lot of makeup you need to divide up between the ‘daily drivers’ and the extra stuff. (Of course, if you have that much of it, you might want to consider some closet storage bins to hold on to the smaller pencils and brushes so they don’t vanish.)
Folded sweaters & seasonal clothes: If you’re like us and you live in a state with weather that seems to change its mind pretty quickly, you might have a lot of seasonal clothes like sweaters, fleece tights, and gloves that take up a lot of room in your dressers when you’re not using it. Closet shelves are a great place to keep these when you’re not using them - just try to keep some cedar chips or bags of lavender near them to keep them smelling good and free of pests!
Linens: Whether you have different bedsheets for different times of year, or you’re just the sort that has new comforters for every mood, closet shelves are a great place to store them that keeps them out of the way, easier to get to (at least compared to cramming them under the bed or hiding them in the attic), and you’ll have them right there for when the weather suddenly changes.
Extra clutches, purses, & wallets: No matter who you are, everyone has extra wallets, purses, clutches, and the like - some are for quick trips to the store, some are for nights out, so on and so forth. Closet shelves are a great option for these so they’re always where you need them and ready to go when you suddenly need somewhere else to keep your debit card - just make sure to empty it out before you put them up there so you don’t have any leftover crumbs or anything in there you don’t want!
Increased hanger space: Depending on the design of your shelving, some closet shelves (like our freedomRail closet storage) allow you to hang additional hangers from the bottom, creating new space for larger items like coats and sweaters, or whatever you need to hang up safely!
There’s a lot more ideas where these came from, and we’re happy to provide inspiration - if you have any extra closet shelf ideas, drop a line in the comments!
