Steps To Take When You Move Into A New Home

Moving can be a big, exciting experience - and let’s be honest, it can be a little overwhelming at times too. You have to find the house, make a deal with the realtor, pack up and move...there’s a lot you have to do before you can get settled into your new house, right? But the part of moving people tend to overlook most is actually moving into the new house. There’s all sorts of things you need to attend to before your family can get settled into your new digs, and a few of them might get skipped in all the hustle and bustle. If you’re about to move into your new home, here’s a few things to do before you’re officially in and settled: Turn On The Lights! It might seem kind of obvious, but you’d be surprise how many people put off contacting their utility companies during a move. Contact your gas, power, and cable/internet providers to make sure they know when you’re moving. Otherwise, it’s going to get awfully cold, dark, and boring in your new house! Evict Any Unwanted Roommates No, we don’t mean the old residents (although if they’re still living there by then, you might want to have a little chat…), we mean any sort of bugs or pests! If your new home looks like it might have a bit of a bug problem or a few mice hanging out around the kitchen, you might want to consider calling a professional or at least laying out some bait to lure them out of your house by the time you move in. Clean Out The Cabinets While your whole kitchen could probably use a good cleaning, the best place to start is by giving the cabinets and countertops a good, fast scrubbing. Grab your favorite sponge or cleaning wipe and give everything a once-over before you move in and start putting away the groceries. If you find your cabinets and pantries are lacking in space, now might be a good time to bring in some kitchen cabinet organization to open up the usable area of your kitchen before you need to start storing food in the new house. Check Out The Pipes & Wires Finally, before you’re settled in full-time, you’re going to want to check out all the plumbing and electrical. Get a professional to check out the plumbing fixtures in the bathroom & kitchen, as well as the water heater, and then move on to the wiring throughout the home to make sure there’s no big, obvious flaws before you move in. It’s just like going to the doctor - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! We hope you enjoy all the time you spend in your new home, and of course, if you have any questions about what kind of shelving or storage you might need in your new home, feel free to contact The Shelving Store today!
