Shed the Clutter: Garden Shed Organization Tips

If you’ve got a shed in your backyard, let’s all be honest for a second: you probably don’t spend as much time organizing it as you do your garage, do you?

That’s fine, we’re not judging you - we’ve all got a shed or two that can use some help. But there’s no doubt that spending the time to get your shed under control can really help out in the long run the next time you need to go digging for your weed whacker, or just want to get something new in your garden. If you want to get your shed under control so you don’t have to keep buying replacement garden gloves because you’re always losing yours, here’s a few tips to help get started:

Purge what you don’t need. As with all the best cleaning projects, a good place to start with your shed - particularly if you haven’t used it for a while over the winter months - is to go through and throw out or replace everything you don’t need. Rake looking a little worse for the wear? Do you really need four snow shovels that are the same size? That wheelbarrow only has one handle, right? This will make some room and get you off to a darn good start.

Build a tool wall. Odds are your shed is still going to have enough hand tools that need a home, so a good solution to this is to set up a tool wall. Garage storage racks can be pretty easily repurposed for use in a shed holding things like garden tools and rakes, and if you’re hard up for space you can always get some garage shelves or just put some nails right into the wall (if it’s a wood shed, of course) to hang everything up for easy access.

Get those hoses under control. They’re not particularly heavy or bulky, but coiled garden hoses can take up a surprising amount of room. A good way to keep them easily accessible and help declutter your shed floor is to hang up some coat hooks and loop your hose around them. (Just make sure it’s long enough to hold an entire garden hose - those things can get longer than you think!)

Arrange for visibility. Most sheds don’t have enough room for lights, so you need to keep everything as visible as possible. Try to organize so that natural sunlight can hit every corner of the shed by not keeping anything too big near the doorway (to prevent shadows), and use some open wire shelving to let light pass through better and help you find smaller stuff you have to keep on shelves.

Keep your most-used items right by the door. With a hanging basket or some plastic storage bins by the door, try to keep some smaller and more frequently-used items where you can get to them most easily. This is perfect for things like gloves, kneepads, smaller trowels and shovels, and anything you find yourself reaching for most often to help you save a little time and effort in the shed.
