Over The Toilet Storage & Organization Tips

Ever feel like you just don’t have enough bathroom to go around? The towels pile up, you can’t find the soap and shampoo, and after a while it feels like you’ve replaced every toothbrush you’ve ever lost only to find it again the next day. While every bathroom needs its own storage ideas, there’s one place we’ve seen that goes pretty consistently under-utilized in any bathroom we look at: the space over the toilet! A lot of people tend to leave their toilets alone when planning their bathroom organization, and while we can understand the impulse to not keep anything over there, there’s actually a lot you can do with that unused space to keep your bathrooms organized and under control: Standalone storage In a lot of cases, the area around your toilet offers a lot of space that tends to go unused. A great way to fill that space with flexible storage options is to use bathroom organizers like hampers and caddies on the floor or walls, to help you keep certain, uh, necessities close at hand! (Yes, that does include reading materials!) Hang wall shelves Of course, if you are the handy type, you could always consider wall shelves! If you hang a couple smaller wall shelves right above the toilet you have a lot of options for storage. In fact, you could use these a few different ways:
  • Set one right above the toilet or at eye level on the adjacent wall to hang on to supplies like toilet paper and soap, keeping them right at hand. You know, if you need them.
  • If you have a few shelves set up slightly higher, you can use them to keep baskets or storage bins for easy decluttering that also helps maintain your privacy for things you need to store that you don’t necessarily need everyone seeing!
  • Or, if you have an extra shelf you don’t need for immediate storage, using it for decoration is an easy way to liven up your bathroom a little bit! Keep pictures, decorations, fishtanks, or anything else you have that’s ornamental to brighten it up a bit - you’d be surprised how often bathrooms get overlooked for decorative options!
Mount baskets right to the walls If you’re not working with enough bathroom space for big shelving options, an easy way to add storage and make the room a little more cozy is to tilt a basket on its side (so the opening is facing right out at you, like a little shelf with a roof) and use it for storage of softer things like towels, bathrobes, or even extra rugs. Improvise a towel rack If it’s close enough to the sink, the space above a toilet is perfect for towel racks, but depending on how much space you have you might need to get a little clever with it. If you have an old curtain rod that can be easily used in place of a standard rack to keep everything at reach and fit the room you have available. These are just a few of the quick and easy over the toilet storage tips we’ve come across, and we’re always happy to learn more! Got any others? Feel free to drop a comment!
