Organizing Your TV Stand

You know, as handy as TV stands and entertainment centers can be, they can get disorganized pretty quickly. Maybe you’re keeping too much stuff there, maybe you’ve got all kinds of cables going everywhere, or maybe you just own too many DVDs and Blu-rays. One way or another, if your TV stand is in need of a little tidying up, here’s a few places to get started: Decide What Can Stay: If your TV stand has a lot of drawers, they’ve probably collected just as much junk and stuff as the rest of your drawers, and let’s face facts: it probably doesn’t all have to be there, right? Go through the cabinets and drawers of your entertainment center and purge what doesn’t need to stick around. Sure, your extra batteries for your remote might be worth keeping, but if your kids don’t use that old Xbox anymore, you probably don’t need to take up TV stand space with it. Get Ready For Movie Night: Similar to the above step, one of the fastest ways to clean up an entertainment center is to pick what movies can stay and what can go. One of the most common uses for a TV stand is to store DVDs, Blu-rays, and even VHS tapes (if you’re feeling retro), and while we’re not saying you have to get rid of any of them it might do you some good to go through your movie collection and only keeping the ones you and your family find themselves watching most frequently, putting the other ones on another shelf to keep them around if you need them, but out of the way of everything else on the entertainment center. Control Your Cables: One of the biggest problems a TV stand can run into is a build-up of cords and cables from everything. There’s the cable box, there’s the TV itself, there’s any Blu-ray players or video game systems you’ve got hooked up to it, and it can all start piling up pretty quickly. Grab a couple surge protectors to help organize all your power cords, and get some zip-ties or small velcro strips to help bundle your cables together and keep them straight and organized. Bring In Some Extra Storage: If you’ve tried all these previous steps and it still isn’t quite as decluttered as you’d like, it might be time to call for some backup. If you have the space near your TV stand, bring in some bookshelves to hang onto extra movies and accessories near your entertainment center, and some extra end tables can help to provide additional surface space for things like cable boxes and modems if you need to open up some room. Whatever kind of TV you use or whatever else you keep on your entertainment stand, these tips should help get you decluttered and ready to relax in front of the tube! (Do they still call it that?)
