By now you’ve probably lived enough different places to find that closets come in a variety of different sizes and dimensions. Some are more shallow, some are a little wider, some of them can barely be called “closets”!
If you live in an older house (or in many apartments), you probably have a very long and shallow closet in your master bedroom. And while organizing closets is a whole project by itself, the sort of methods you might need for a more uniquely-shaped closet will be different than organizing your typical everyday closets. If you have a longer closet, we’ve got a few tips here to help keep everything tidy - even without a lot of space to work with!
Use The Length To Your Advantage: The first step in organizing one of these longer closets is to remember you have length to work with, not depth like you usually do in closets. This leaves a lot of room for things like hanging rods and shorter wire shelving to lay across the floor to organize things like makeup bags and shoes. Even if you can’t stock items too far back in your closet, you can use the space to hang things and get wider storage solutions to help keep everything straight.
Find Drawers That Fit: Drawers are especially handy in increasing the storage capacity of any closet without much depth. Finding wide, flat closet organizers will both keep your overhead space free for hanging rods, shelving, and the like and give you extra space for clothing items that don’t necessarily need to be hung up.
Remember The Side Walls: Even the longest closet has walls on either side - and those are perfect for organizing! Lean some small bookcases against each wall to increase storage space, or mount some hanging closet shelves on the side walls to provide a little extra space for smaller items that can’t be hung up, or things that don’t need to be accessed on the top shelf.
The Back Of The Door: Depending on what style your closet door uses - French/bi-fold versus bypass - you can get some over the door closet storage to increase your capacity. Smaller items or more frequently-needed supplies can hang here for easier access and to avoid taking up space in the closet itself!
