Organizing For The Visual-Minded

Everyone has different learning styles and methods of processing information, right? Some of us learn by doing, some of us retain information better by seeing it visually in front of us, and so on. If you’re the visual type who forgets about something as soon as you stop looking at it (it’s okay, we’ve all been there sometimes) you might find yourself facing special organization challenges, and what works for one might not work for others. There’s plenty of different methods you can look into to help organize better as a more visually-minded thinker, and we’ve got a few tips to help you get started! Start With Decluttering: Most visual-minded thinkers are at their happiest when their home doesn’t hold more than they can can process visually - or, in simpler terms, they don’t want to see a big mess everywhere they go! It might be a little hard to part with some things, but a good first step is to get rid of a lot of extra clutter and let go of some of the mess. Make yourself throw out or donate one thing every day, and you’ll find your space slowly getting reclaimed from the clutter you’re faced with. Find Some Open Shelving: As you can probably imagine, the key for visual processors is to be able to see everything. To reduce anxiety and help mentally manage your home and possessions a little better, you’ll want to look for shelving that provides a high degree of visibility and accessibility. Things like wire shelving and bookcases provide good, visible storage that can organize a number of different items, and plastic storage bins can help you color-code and divide your smaller items, tools, and supplies. Get Everything Labeled: Once everything is where it’s supposed to be, an extra step to easily convey visual information is our old friend, the shelf label! Take some time to carefully label any storage bin or shelf unit you use with its contents - this will both help indicate its contents quickly, and remind you where everything is supposed to go when it comes time to put things back. This can also help a lot with things like binders and filing cabinets to better organize paperwork and needed desk supplies and visually represent what they contained. Keep Surfaces Cleared Off: Sure, everyone has stuff they want to keep on coffee tables and end tables in the living room, but it’s important not to go crazy! Many visual thinkers function better when horizontal surfaces are free of debris and can display open visual space. Go ahead and keep some favorite movies and books out on these tables, but don’t go overboard - you might just find yourself a little more stressed than usual! Tidy Up Your Closet: A common issue among visual processors is the constant re-wearing of certain clothes because you just plain forgot you owned other clothes! Get some closet shelving and keep everything in a constant rotation - before you do laundry to wash the stuff you just wore, get a cycle going to bring new stuff to the fold (and right up front where you can see it - which is the important part!) and keep everything worn regularly! Hopefully with these tips we can keep the more visual-minded among you organized and stress-free! Or...at least less stressed.
