It seems like there’s a lot of talk about getting more (and better) sleep these days, and for good reason! Studies have shown that normal hardworking folk like you and I are getting way less sleep these days than ever before, and while there’s a number of reasons for that, perhaps the more important question to ask is:
how can I get more sleep?
While a lot of people have a lot of suggestions for sleeping better, one of the more underrated (and effective) ways to get more sleep at night is to re-organize your bedroom! Out of all the contributing factors to sleepless nights, visual clutter and disorganized rooms are both one of the biggest factors and one of the most unknown and un-fixed problems when it comes to bedtime. If you find yourself staying up a little later than you’d like, we’ve got some tips here to keep your bedroom organized
and get more sleep at night!
Find the right nightstand
One of the first steps to reducing bedroom clutter, particularly when it comes to sleep, is to find the right nightstand!
Nightstands, particularly those with closed designs, are a great way to tuck things like glasses, phones, and other clutter away for the night so you’re not tempted to use them at bedtime, nor are you constantly overstimulated by the things closest to you when you’re trying to sleep.
Figure out what to keep nearby when it’s bedtime
Part of the problem with nightstands and tables in the bedroom is their tendency to accumulate a lot of clutter and excess items right where you least need them. Try to limit your nightstand to comfort items like fresh vases and a candle of your favorite scent, maybe your current book, and a spot to put your tea or water in case you get thirsty. (And get in the habit of leaving your phone in the drawer, or at least far enough away that it can’t distract you!)
Keep clothes where they belong
Too many dirty clothes, or an overstuffed dresser, can be a source of anxiety - mild, but enough to keep you awake or wake you up before it’s time! Find a
dresser with enough drawers to keep everything tidy and organized, and find a good way to store dirty laundry that isn’t right in the way (like a
hamper) so you’re not distracted by all the clutter.
Move (Or Remove) the TV
While there’s a lot of us who sleep with the TV on, or at least keep one in their room, it might be best to re-locate it. The light from most TVs can interfere with sleep patterns, so if you need to keep one in your room try to keep it where the light will bother you the least. Of course, if you can live without it, you might want to consider removing it from your bedroom altogether.
Find a home for your accessories
The bedroom is a pretty common place for smaller accessories like reading glasses, jewelry, and so on. These can clutter up a dresser or nightstand pretty fast, so you’re going to want to find some
plastic storage bins or another small container to keep them out of the way and right where you need them - this will both prevent morning rushes to get ready and help keep your bedroom tidied up and restful!
Once you’ve gotten everything straightened up, you just might be surprised at how much the quality of your nightly sleep improves!
