Anyone with kids, roommates, or even anyone who just owns a lot of clothes has probably run into constant entryway clutter.
Even after everyone’s broken the habit of throwing their coats on that one poor chair nobody sits in (no judgment, we all do it) it feels like your entryway, foyer, or mudroom can get awfully cluttered with shoes, coats, backpacks, and more. Since not everyone is lucky enough to have a giant house with an entryway the size of a living room - and some of us don’t even have a dedicated entryway - space is at a premium in these areas and any clutter can start to be a big problem.
If you’ve got some cluttered doorways and entryways and you’re just not too sure what to do about it, never fear! We’ve got some easy organization ideas here to keep everything off the floor and help you finally be able to open your door all the way without a pile of shoes behind it:
Good placement of coat hooks: Sure, coat hooks are always a good call for entryways (or any room the coats usually wind up in) but what most people don’t consider is where to put them. Get a low-profile coat hook and hang it on the wall opposite the door - this way the door can swing freely open, and nobody has to worry about getting in the way when they reach to put their jackets on in the morning.
Combine storage with seating: Shoes are always a big problem in entryways, and one of the best ways around that is to get some storage that does a few jobs. One of the easiest methods is to get a shoe storage bench that gives everyone a place to sit while getting ready as well as keeping their shoes in easily organized cubbies so they’re off the floor and out of the way!
Individual storage bins for the little stuff: Of course, the stuff in your entryway isn’t always the big hard-to-lose items like shoes and coats (not that we’ve never lost a shoe). For smaller items like gloves, hats, and scarves, you might want to consider some plastic storage bins or closet storage cubbies, marked with everyone’s name or some fun decorations, to keep them all together.
Better use of walls: A common problem in entryways is a lack of available floor space, and the easiest solution to that is just to look up! Most entryways have enough space for a few wall shelves or wall mounted coat hooks that can at least take some of the storage burden off of whatever’s on the floor, and can go a long way to making a room feel less cluttered.
Check those corners: Corners are a frequently under-utilized area for storage in modern houses, and corner shelving units can be a good place to keep things like shoes and backpacks while still giving everyone free access to and from the entryway.
Try a few of these tips and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how free and clear your entryways and doorways get!
