How To Disassemble Wire Shelving

Wire shelving is designed for both durability and ease of use — which includes taking it apart when needed. Whether you're relocating, reorganizing, or repurposing your shelving unit, disassembly is straightforward with the right approach.

What You’ll Need:

  • A rubber mallet (your wire shelving’s best friend!)

Step 1: Flip the Unit (Recommended)

Let gravity do the heavy lifting. Carefully tilt your shelving unit onto its side by gripping the top and slowly guiding it down to the ground. Then lift from the base to stand it upright again—upside down. This small move makes it much easier to remove the shelves in the next steps.

Step 2: Loosen and Remove the Top Shelf

Use your rubber mallet to tap downward on each corner of the top shelf. This loosens it from the plastic shelf clips. For added control, apply gentle pressure with your opposite hand (well clear of the mallet) to prevent the shelf from slipping back into place.

Step 3: Remove the Shelf Clips

Once the shelf is free, remove the clips from each post. These snap off easily, allowing the shelf to slide up and off the frame.

Step 4: Repeat for the Remaining Shelves

Continue removing shelves and clips in the same manner, working from top to bottom.

Helpful Tip:
If your shelving unit is 64" or taller, the posts are usually threaded in the middle and can be unscrewed into two shorter sections. Separating the posts can make it easier to lift off remaining shelves.

Removing the Bottom Shelf:
The bottom shelf often comes off without any tools. Simply step gently on the side of the shelf while pulling the posts upward. If the posts feel stuck, twist them slightly as you pull.
