No matter how many hot tips you get to make cleaning easier, or how often you try new methods to stay motivated, cleaning can start to feel awfully overwhelming sometimes. For every room you tidy up, there’s bound to be two other rooms that need help, and so on and so forth.
It might not work for everyone, but if you find yourself always overwhelmed by the need for cleaning, you might want to consider setting a master schedule! Setting a daily, weekly, or monthly plan for how you’ll clean your house can be just the thing to help keep you focused, motivated, and on track for a cleaner house - and much less stress!
Here’s a few suggestions and methods for scheduling we’ve pulled together that might get you in the mood to clean:
Create A Master Task List: The best place to start with scheduling is to get an idea of everything you have to do. Now don’t freak out - you’re not going to do it all at once by any means, but writing down everything that you need to do regularly or semi-regularly will help you be more aware of what you need to do and when you could (or should) be doing it.
Group Tasks by Frequency: After you assemble your big list, you need to take a look at how often many of the tasks need to happen. A very important thing to keep in mind here is to not force yourself to do too much - sure, the bathtub or toilet could use a good scrubbing, but is that really something you have to do every day? Grouping your chores by how often they need to happen or how often you can reasonably do them is a perfect way to start working out a regular schedule.
Figure Out How Much Time You Have: Now, this might not be a problem for everyone, but a pretty common issue during cleaning is overestimating the amount of time you have to work with and how much time it will take to get everything done. After figuring out what cleaning tasks you have, you need to think about anything else in your life that you need to get done - work schedules, school schedules, extracurricular activities, those yoga classes you keep putting off, whatever else you have going on. This step is crucial to get an idea of how you can fit in all the chores you need to fit, and see if you have to change or tweak anything in the process.
Get Your Supplies Together: It’s going to save you a lot of time and stress if you make sure you have the tools you need to get your cleaning done before you embark on your new schedule. Take a second look at your list and get all of the soap, cleaning wipes, mops, wire shelving, kitchen organization, and anything else you might need to actually get work done well beforehand so it’s right there when you need it, however your schedule works out.
Remember To Stick To It: Finally, the most important step is just to remember to stick to your schedule and make a habit out of it. It’s going to be daunting at worst and inconvenient at best for a while, but the point of schedules is to make it part of your routine. After the first week or two, you’ll probably get used to it - and hey, once you see how clean your house is and how much less stress you’re feeling, you might even like it!
