Halloween Activities for the Kids

With Halloween right around the corner, odds are you’ve already got some plans - trick or treating around your favorite neighborhood, maybe a visit to a friend’s house for scary movies (but not too scary!). But if you’ve got some kids to keep entertained before the evening’s festivities - or maybe you need to find some things to do to prevent a big sugar rush - we’ve got a quick list of easy Halloween activities to keep the little ghosts and goblins in your house entertained before they hit the streets, looking for candy! Make Your Own Treat Baskets Before the trick or treating begins, bring all the kids together and help everyone make their very own candy pail to keep their goodies in! There’s a few ways to do this - if your kids are old enough to sew, you could cut a few squares of orange and green felt and let everyone sew together their own jack-o-lantern tote bags. If sewing isn’t quite up their (or your) alley, then you could always get some smaller plastic buckets or pre-made tote bags, provide a lot of safely washable tempera paint, and let their imaginations run! Spooky Story Time This is a good one to do right before the trick or treating starts to make sure everyone’s in the right mood! Take a corner or room of your house, make sure it’s seasonally decorated for Halloween, and gather everyone together to read your favorite childhood spooky stories! Nothing too scary, of course, considering the age of everyone involved, but sometimes a good short scary story is just what you need to get everyone in the Halloween spirit. Easy Halloween Games! Sure, a lot of this will depend on the layout of your house and how much space you have available, but if you’ve got a lot of kids to entertain why not break out some fun party games? Traditional games can easily be repurposed into a Halloween theme - you could change ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ to ‘pin the BOO! on the ghost’, for example, or any of you Midwesterners could easily set up a cornhole game decorated with scary cobwebs and spiders. And hey, there’s always the old standby of the haunted house - complete with a bowl of cold spaghetti as “witch’s hair” - to go to! One way or another, we here at The Shelving Store wish you and yours a safe and happy Halloween!
