Five Ways Home Organization Can Help Your Pets

Pets! Whether airborne or four-legged, scaled, feathered, or furry, tank-bound or caged in a cozy terrarium, we’ve all got them and we all love them. Of course, no matter how much we love our pets, one thing is true: they’re always going to have a big impact on how you organize and set up your home. If you’ve got a pet of any kind you’ve probably found yourself buying a lot of food and supplies (toys, grooming tools, and more) and you might not know where to put them! Here’s five home organization tips to keep your pets safe, happy, and well-fed:
  1. Safe Food Storage: No matter how many table scraps your beloved pet has run off with, many pets still have pretty serious food allergies that you need to be aware of. By keeping your pets’ food somewhere safe and free from contaminants or allergens, you can make sure their dinner is free of anything that could get them sick or hurt them. Try to give pet food its own spot in the pantry, preferably on a pantry organizer to keep them from coming into contact with other, less-safe products.
  2. Outdoor Shelter: Even if you don’t have a pet, there’s bound to be a lot of strays in your neighborhood, and those poor dogs and cats are gonna get cold! With a little clever positioning, plastic storage bins can be easily converted into a shelter for stray animals in the neighborhood. Just make sure to include some blankets and bowls for food and warmth and they’ll be all set!
  3. Keep Everything Chew-Proof: Cats, dogs, even rabbits and hamsters - most pets will chew on darn near anything if you give them the chance. And while chewing on certain things is good (and even required) for many animals, you still need to be careful about what they’re chewing on, and this generally doesn’t mean plastic furniture or wooden tables! Try to put up some wire shelving or metal tables in areas of your house where your pets travel most to prevent them from chewing on something they shouldn’t, and keep them chewing on stuff that they should!
  4. Get Your Grooming Supplies Together: Unless you’ve decided to stick with just reptiles and fish, your fine furry friends are going to need the occasional brushing, and those aren’t exactly brushes you’re going to want to get confused with your own! Grab an empty drawer somewhere and keep your brushes, combs, and pet shampoo together somewhere safe and out-of-the-way.
  5. Easy Access to Toys & Walk Supplies: Every pet has toys, and many of them want to go for walks - even cats and iguanas! Make sure you have plenty of toys at hand in their own bins or shelves, and you can use coat hooks as an easy way to store collars and leashes when it’s walkies time!
This is just a small sampling of the ways that organizing your home can benefit you and your pets, but this should put you off to a great start!
