Clean Up Those Overflowing Dresser Drawers!

Some of the more fashion-minded of you out there are all too familiar with the problem of overflowing dresser drawers. You’ve worked this hard to build up a good collection of clothes for every situation and you just can’t quite make yourself part with them - trust us, we understand! But this can lead to an inability to actually store anything. Your dressers are constantly stuffed to the brim, with shirts and socks falling out every time you so much as look at it. Even if you are willing to part with something, what are you supposed to do with it all? Don’t worry - The Shelving Store is here to help! Take inventory: The best place to start is by figuring out what all you have. Empty each drawer, one at a time, into an open space or on your bed and sort through it all. There’s two things you should look for while you sort through it all - anything that might have fallen into the wrong drawer (shirts in the pants drawer, and so on) and anything that you can get rid of. Sort it all out: The next step is to put it all where it’s supposed to go. Figure out what you can get rid of (or at least aren’t going to wear in the near future due to seasonality or anything) and separate it all. Clothing still ‘in the rotation’ needs to go in the appropriate drawer with like types (pants with pants, shirts with shirts, etc) and everything else either needs to be stashed away for the next season, and - only if you’re up for it - you can start getting rid of whatever you’re never going to wear again. Get some organization going: So now that it’s all sorted out and ready to go, the worst thing would be to put it all back where it went just as messy as before, wouldn’t it? Find a way to divide your dresser drawers using plastic containers or drawer organizers to keep everything tidier. In a pinch, you might need to buy a second smaller bedroom dresser to hang onto your extra clothes and your out-of-season clothing to help free up space. Take out the smaller stuff: A big cause of dresser drawer clutter is stuff that doesn’t belong in there. There’s a long list of reasons as to why it might wind up in there, but we’ve all got a drawer or two that winds up full of old wallets, change, batteries, or whatever else might work its way in there. Find somewhere else for it to go, and watch the space open right up! Rethink your current methods: To prevent this all from happening again, you might want to consider organizing things a little differently. If your smaller drawers run out of space faster than the top drawers, you might want to consider swapping what’s in them to keep them from getting crowded again. You can also consider more subtle methods, like folding your shirts differently, using small fabric containers to keep everything discrete and separate, or even hanging some things up that you never used to hang up. Consider donating: Finally, if your drawers still aren’t getting tidied up, you’re going to need to consider doing it the hard way: donating some stuff you’re not going to wear again. We know how hard it can be to get rid of some favorite pants or your old lucky scarf, but if it’s in too bad shape or simply not something you’ll ever wear again, this might be a perfect opportunity to sell or donate some of your old stuff to someone that needs it!
