Trying to untangle the cord on my flat iron or search for my favorite blending brush for a smokey eye have all been reasons I have shown up late for a date or dinner with friends. Getting ready in the morning or for a night out can be overwhelming. Styling your hair, applying makeup and picking out an outfit and accessories is a process that can become so time-consuming and frustrating, I often have wanted to give up or cancel plans.
Before letting it get the best of me, I asked my friends about their makeup organization process and quickly learned that I was doing everything wrong. Getting my makeup organized and in easily-accessible spots was something I had never thought to do. Now, getting ready is a process that is both fun and fast. I actually look forward to it!
Don’t let a messy vanity or bathroom get in the way of your personal or professional life. Take a look at some ways to get makeup organized all over your house, and use them for inspiration!
Install a magnetic board to your wall to maximize space in a bathroom or bedroom. Here, small adhesive magnets are applied to the back of compacts and pallets for easy-access and organization. Containers can even be added to hold items like brushes, eyeliner and lipstick. Applying an adorable shelf liner or picture frame quickly adds character and style.
Keep your brushes and other skinny objects sorted. When I first started organizing my brushes, placing all of them upside down in mason jars made a world of a difference. But, as a girl with 30 makeup brushes, I still would have trouble locating a favorite brush for a certain look. Label and sort your containers by brush type, then add adaptable weight to the bottom to keep them separated and easy to spot. Rice, coffee beans and aquarium gravel are all incredibly affordable options that will last long and adjust easily to each brush.
Hair styling tools are perhaps the most expensive beauty item we own, yet we rarely treat them as such. Because of their odd shape and long cords, the first thought is to hide them somewhere guests can’t find. This usually leads to a tangled nest of power cords and frustration. Repurposing a mounted desk file holder onto a wall, side of a sink or door makes for a solution that fits objects like flat irons and curling irons. For a less permanent fix (looking at you, renters and dorm girls) attach hooks with adhesive to your cabinet door or wall, or sit a cardboard file holder on top of a counter or vanity.
Maximize bathroom storage by making use of the back and inside door of your medicine cabinet. This works great if you lack counter space or share a bathroom. Apply magnetic strips or adhesive to notepad hooks and acrylic containers for extra space to store toiletries and other frequently used products. Spice canisters with a magnet can be used to house the small, easy-to-lose items like bobby pins and hair ties.
Before going to the store for everything you need to start organizing, consider what you already have. Tools normally meant for an office desk work perfectly for getting makeup organized. Use a file holder to sort eyeshadow pallets or a desktop organizer to keep products neatly tucked away. Drawer organizers are great for sorting makeup and toiletries by type, making finding what you need a quicker process. If you don’t already own any of these, luckily they are easy to find and very affordable.
Don’t let the cabinet below your bathroom sink be a place just for extra toilet paper and cleaning supplies. Maximize it’s space by adding cabinet organizers or plastic storage bins. Creating multiple levels of storage allows you to fit more in the cabinet while remaining tidy in the process. If you live with children or roommates, create a drawer or bin for each person to avoid mix ups and the awkward “Who stole my eyeliner?!?” argument.
Don’t be afraid to add to your walls, too! Over the door storage is a quick way to add makeup storage to areas that might not have a lot of available table space or room under the counters. Or, get crafty by mounting mason jars for a rustic look that adds both decor and function to a bathroom or bedroom. A magnetic strip from a hardware or craft store can be used to keep hold of metal items that are both easy to lose and difficult to store.
With these tips, organizing your makeup and getting that vanity under control should be easier than ever!
