Today is Friday the 13th, which to some people means it’s the second Friday of the month, and to others it means doom and gloom! Years of superstition, urban legend, and scary movies have trained us to think any Friday the 13th is a day of bad luck and misfortune for everybody.
Of course, if you’re the sort that believes in luck, there’s always ways around it! Good luck charms, talismans, and even the way you organize your home can all affect the amount of luck and positive energy in your life! Whether you call it feng shui or simply decluttering, there’s a lot of people that think the way your home is organized can bring you good luck - and hey, if you’re the type that fears Friday the 13th, what do you have to lose?
Step 1: Rearrange Your Furniture
One of the biggest principles behind bringing positive energy into your home is the way everything is laid out, particularly with your furniture. Try placing your living room furniture in a more circular pattern and rearrange your bedroom so your bed is diagonal to the door, allowing you to rest your back against the wall when you sit up. This is said to let good vibes flow through your home more easily and make it more comfortable for you, your family, and your guests - and even if you don’t believe in good luck, that should be a good motivator in itself!
Step 2: Declutter Your Entryway
While decluttering is a pretty good idea even if it isn’t Friday the 13th, a common belief in feng shui is to keep your entryway free of clutter and well-organized. Take out everything that doesn’t belong in your entryway (as stuff like old mail, snow shovels, and mysteriously unused keys can tend to pile up in any mudroom or foyer) and store everything that does need to be in there with entryway storage furniture to keep it all decluttered and presentable. Having an inviting welcome to your home will go a long way towards keeping you comfortable and able to think clearly!
Step 3: Decorate Carefully
Sometimes there’s no better way to get some good luck going than to buy some old-fashioned good luck charms! It doesn’t have to be anything tacky or obvious - unless you really want to just cover everything in four leaf clovers - but some good luck symbols can both freshen up your decor and might even help ward off the bad vibes of Friday the 13th. Get some decorative wall shelving and hang up some lucky horseshoes for that rustic look, plant some bamboo by a window (bamboo being considered the equivalent of a four leaf clover by many cultures), or even just decorate with elephants or rabbits! Maybe some of their luck will rub off on you?
Step 4: Use Lucky Colors
Lucky colors can vary from person to person and culture to culture, but the idea that certain colors bring prosperity is pretty common and is worth looking into! A red front door is frequently thought to invite prosperity and luck, green drapery and decorations are considered luck in many cultures, or just use the colors of your favorite sports team to bring both you and your players luck in the next season!
Step 5: Remember To Not Freak Out
If this all seems like a lot of work but you’re the kind to worry about Friday the 13th, as the saying goes, just keep calm and carry on. The day will be over soon enough, and once midnight hits everything will be juuuuust fine. (And if it helps, go ahead and stay up until midnight - it’s the weekend, you can live a little!)
